1945-1972 Western Publishing Co. Produces
Marge's Little Lulu Comic Books

Marge signed an agreement in 1944 with Western Publishing Company for publishing and distributing a variety of books, comics, and other publications which featured Little Lulu and other characters assiciated with her in stories, pictures, or other printed form. This included coloring and other activity books, phonograph records, games, puzzles, and sewing cards. The agreement also included comic panel rights for newspaper publication.

This page contains information about the comic books. In 1945 Western began publishing Marge's Little Lulu comic books. These comics were produced by Western's staff, with the stories initially primarily written by John Stanley and the artwork done by Irving Tripp, under Marge's artistic supervision until 1972, when Marge sold the rights to Western. The comics were initially published under the Dell label; later under Gold Key.

The Elusive LL #260

Dell Comics 1948

Following the ten Four Color comics, Dell began to produce Little Lulu comics regularly, every two months for the first year, beginning with Volume I Issue #1 in January-February, 1948. The comics LL #1 through LL #14 had 36 pages; LL #15 through LL #40 had 52 pages. They sold for 10¢, as did the Four Color comics. They also had the same cover format as did the Four Colors, with the main picture framed by the little Lulus around the sides and bottom.

Dell Comics 1949 - 1950

After the first year of regular issues, the Little Lulu comics were published monthly, beginning in January, 1949 with issue #7. The comics continued to sell for 10¢. The look of the cover changed: Instead of the frame of Lulus around the sides and bottom of the picture, there was a design that went down the left side. The comics LL #1 through LL #14 had 36 pages; LL #15 through LL #40 had 52 pages.

The Elusive LL #260

"LITTLE LULU #260 = Whitman 3-Pack issue (9/1980) = Rarest issue in series!"

One of these comics sold at eBay Auction for over $800. They are definitely rare, but I'm wondering how rare they are. I'm conducting an informal survey of Lulu comic collectors to see how many actually have this issue and how many are still missing it.

If you want to participate, please e-mail me and let me know which of the following applies to your collection:

1. I have the entire Little Lulu comic collection, including #260.
2. I have many of the Little Lulu comics, including #260.
3. I have the entire Little Lulu comic collection except for #260.
4. I have many Little Lulu comics, but not #260.
5. Other (please explain)
