Location: Valentine, Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge, Cherry County, Nebraska
Water Source: Fort Creek
Drop: 45 Feet
Directions: Take Rt. 12 east from Valentine, from the place where Rt. 83 turns off north, for 4.1 miles to the road into Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge. Turn right (south) into the refuge. At .2 miles, off to the right, are some falls at the dam where there was a mill. Continue for a total of .8 miles (going past the Visitor Center) to the road to Fort Falls, and turn left on that road. Continue for a total of 1.9 miles to the falls trail. There is a short walk, including 69 steps, to bottom of the falls.
Notes: I visited Fort Falls on March 21, 2003. You can see some ice that remained on the hillside to the left of the falls. I continued on the short walk below the falls out to the Niobrara River. There was a sign for the falls at the river for boaters. After visiting the falls, I drove around the wildlife refuge, and saw lots of prairie dogs and some elk
