St. Louis Canyon Falls

Location: Starved Rock State Park, La Salle County, Illinois

Water Source: St. Louis Canyon Creek

Drop: 50 Feet

Directions: Take Rt. 178 north, from the junction of Routes 71 and 178 just south of Utica, for about 0.4 miles and turn right where the sign points to trail parking. Continue about 0.4 miles to the parking area. The trail is about 1/4 miles to the falls.

Notes: I visited St. Louis Falls on April 11, 2002. Because this and most of the waterfalls in Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks run only in the spring, I was hoping I was early enough to see them (I tried a couple of times before to see the waterfalls in Starved Rock State Park, but they were dry.) We had a lot of rain that spring, so the waterfalls were still running. One lady, who apparently visits the waterfalls there frequently, said this was the most water she had ever seen at St. Louis Canyon Falls, so I felt pretty lucking getting there at that time.

I picked up a trail map for the park at the Information Center in Utica, and I was able to follow the trails with no problems. Most of the canyons have waterfalls running into them in the spring.
