Directions: Take the Utica Exit from I-80 and go south on highway 178 for about 4 miles (past the junction with Rt. 71.) Follow the signs to the Dells Area, Matthiessen State Park, and turn right into the park. Go about 1 mile to the parking area. The trailhead is near the parking area, and includes 200 stairs down to the trail to the falls.
Notes: I visited Lake Falls on April 11, 2002. Mattheissen State Park is close to Starved Rock State Park, in which I found other waterfalls. Mattheissen State Park has very good signs with lcoations of the falls and other sights.
The first photo shows a small falls downstream from Lake Falls. The second and third show Lake Falls, which falls from a lake high above. The fourth photo is from above the falls across the bridge.
I saw some wildflowers along the trail to the falls. I believe they are Bloodroot, Hypatica, and Spring Beauty.
